While unfair, unfortunate, and unnecessary, there still seems to remain a serious social stigma attached to women — more so than men — who seek treatment for alcoholism or addiction.
At Unity Recovery Center, we’ve learned many women postpone substance abuse treatment because of what they view as their responsibilities as wives, mothers, daughters, significant others, sole breadwinners, and heads-of-households. These nurturing roles are important, but should not be viewed as obstacles to obtaining lifesaving care.
Women too often arrive at treatment centers with many issues that are less likely to appear in the lives of their male counterparts. It’s more common for women needing help with their chemical dependency than men to have been victims of domestic violence, financial abuse, sexual assaults, to be single parents, or to be juggling multiple roles in a family. It’s also more likely for women to be suffering from a co-existing mood disorder. Low self-esteem along with negative feelings such as fear, guilt, shame, and embarrassment may make it difficult for women to come to terms with their disease.
Our Rehab for Women Program provides a safe, loving, empathetic environment for clients to identify troublesome personal issues that may contribute to their chemical dependency. Treatment is highly individualized, based upon the needs of each woman. Unity integrates addiction treatment with mental health care, insuring proper management of dual diagnosis clients.
Women in particular may benefit from outpatient treatment upon completion of their inpatient program.

Men and women face many different issues when during treatment for their alcohol or drug addiction. It’s important for male and female members of our recovering community to be comfortable in addressing all of their issues, sometimes with only members of their sex present. Single gender therapy provides this opportunity. At times, however, group therapy — with both men and women comprising the group — can be healthful. Clients relearn how to thoughtfully, soberly interact with members of the opposite sex, while projecting and respecting appropriate boundaries.
We also offer men’s rehab treatment programs.
