Addiction to drugs or alcohol is often a family problem. Nearly one-third of American families have a member suffering from a substance abuse problem. The families suffer too.
Families can be victims of addictions. Occurrences of divorce, domestic violence, child abuse, mental disorders, and even physical ailments are much more common in families when one or more members are chemically dependent.
Children from addicted families are especially vulnerable. They appear to be more likely to have behavioral problems, low self-esteem, depression, social maladjustment, and dysfunctional relationships. These issues regularly appear even if the addiction is a generation removed.
If the addict enters recovery, the family should attempt the same. With effort — and time — many of the problems associated with addicted families become more manageable and the healing begins. Participation in Al-Anon or Narc-Anon, family therapy, and individual counseling can aid in whole family recovery.
At Unity Recovery Center, we devote an entire week each month for families of our clients’ introductions to the recovery process. We encourage family engagement in group activities, role-playing, group and individual therapy sessions. Our program provides the family with a more thorough understanding of addiction and explains the roles they may play in enabling their loved one’s disease.
It’s important for the newly recovering individual to have a fair chance at maintaining his or her sobriety. But expectations for all involved must be realistic and appropriate boundaries should be observed. Rehabs that treat the whole family
help in setting healthy limits.
Family therapy is a valuable component in our addiction treatment regimen. We hope all involved will be able to attend. However if it’s not possible for all involved to join us, participation via conference calls is provided.
