Holistic Drug Rehab – Reducing Stress During Treatment

Facing the reality of addiction and entering a drug rehab center is difficult. For many, finding a way to a clean and sober life will be the toughest challenge they have ever faced – but holistic drug rehab can be an ally in this battle.

Reducing the stress of substance withdrawal is an important part of a comprehensive treatment process. When a person is dependent on drugs or alcohol, anxiety is the natural result of the removal of the substance of choice. After detox, addicts often feel anxious and restless – this can lead to panic attacks, depression or even insomnia.

Holistic rehab centers offer techniques like yoga, guided meditations and relaxation to aid in lessening the stress and emotional side effects of drug withdrawal. These simple modalities can be a surprisingly huge help to reduce stress overall and aid in developing healthy sleep patterns.

Of course, anxiety is sometimes also a preexisting condition. Years of self-medicating masks feelings of anxiety that can actually be a root psychiatric condition. Some drug rehab programs also offer diagnosis and treatment for the conditions of depression or anxiety. Once a person gets clean and sober, the original negative feelings they were trying to avoid usually return. Medical experts and clinic staff will work with each resident to discover whether these feelings stem from a a clinical condition, or are just related to addiction withdrawal.

Another useful approach to reducing the stress of recovery is physical fitness.  Working out is a great, healthy way to direct nervous energy and take one’s mind off stress and worry.  Besides the usual benefits of working out – such as cardiovascular health and weight loss – exploring physical fitness is a way for those recovering from drug addiction   to  release endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever.

Yoga, meditation and working out are not only beneficial during treatment. Including any or all of them in one’s routine outside of holistic drug rehab also can become a valuable way for a newly-sober person to meet people and make new  friends in a social situation that’s completely free of drugs and alcohol.
